With everyone’s lives becoming increasingly hectic, fitting in a workout often seems like an impossible task, which means cutting corners happens more often than it should. For many people, the first thing that gets cut from a workout is post-workout stretching which is actually dramatically reducing the benefits of your overall workout!  The below option are referring to static stretching (long slow holds), but we also don’t want to forget pre-workout dynamic stretching HERE is one of the best stretches you should be doing prior to each workout.

Stretching not only brings with it its own long list of benefits, but it actually enhances the benefits of your workout when done consistently.

post-workout stretching

The long list of benefits or post-workout stretching includes, but is not limited to:

1.- Injury Prevention

Stretching while the muscles are warm allows them to gain flexibility and increased range of motion both of which are key to protecting muscles during your workouts.

2.-Decreased Lactic Acid

As you push your muscles to fatigue, lactic acid builds up which then leads to post-workout muscle soreness. Stretching helps to release the lactate build-up which in turn reduces muscle inflammation and discomfort. With less soreness, you have one less excuse to avoid going hard at your next workout!

3.-Increased Blood Circulation

Stretching helps to enhance blood circulation which comes with a lengthy list of health benefits including promoting cell growth and organ function as well as building cardiac and artery function. As well, improved blood circulation boosts energy levels. Esthetically, increased blood circulation contributes to healthy nails, hair and skin and who isn’t striving to achieve that healthy glow?

4.-Gradually Slows the Body

After a vigorous workout, the body needs time to slow down to avoid dizziness and fainting. As well, this allows the body time to release the “feel good” hormones dopamine and serotonin, also known as endorphins. This is the time where the benefits of your workout support your mental and emotional health leaving you ready to face the world.

Yes, post-workout stretching is technically one more thing to add to your To Do List, however the benefits of doing so are too great to ignore. So instead of thinking of it as something you have to do after your workout, plan for it as a part of your workout. You don’t skip squats or burpees do you??
